Glossitis is an inflammation of the tongue that causes it to swell in size, change into different shades of red, and develop a smooth appearance on the surface.
Treatment
The tongue usually heals by itself, but if the condition persists, your doctor may prescribe antibiotics, or antifungal medications. You may also be prescribed a mouth rinse containing a steroid solution or some other type of medicated mouth rinse that you swish around your mouth and spit out.
If you smoke or use other types of tobacco products, your doctor may suggest that you quit or at least stop long enough for your tongue to heal. Oral hygiene is important, especially while the tongue is healing. Basically, you will need to avoid everything that might cause further irritation while your tongue is healing.
